In English law, formerly a court order for
maintenance against the alleged father of an
illegitimate child. Under the Family Law
Reform Act 1987, either parent can apply for
a court order for maintenance of children, no
distinction being made between legitimate and
illegitimate children. In 1969 blood tests
were first used to prove `non-paternity';
they are not equally conclusive of paternity.
Genetic fingerprinting was first used in 1988
in Britain to prove paternity and thereby
allow immigration to the UK.
